Vietnam Co-ordinating Committee July 4 demonstration US Consulate, Melbourne. length: 20'06"

Category: ASIO Surveillance Films

July 4, American Independance day became an annual day of protest in Melbuorne in the late 1960s and into the 1970s.  Starting from a few people holding candles in 1967 the protest grew in size and action as more militant groups such as the Worker Student Alliance (WSA) gained influence in the event.  This protest on July 4, 1968 was largely peaceful and as can be seen - protesters ranged from high school kids to university students, unionists and members of the Communist Party of Australia.

This film was shot from the Chevron hotel across the road from the Consulate on the corner of St. Kilda Rd and Commercial Rd.
