Eddie Mabo photographed by ASIO aoutside a meeting of the North Queensland branch of the Communist Party of Australia in Townsville. Until 1972, the Communist Party was then only majorb party to officially support land rights. This lead ASIO to keep close watch on the struggle for land as potentially a front for Communist sibversion.
The Mabo case overturned the concepot of Terra Nulius, the assumption that the land was unoccupied prior to the arrival of white colonists. Eddie Mabo received a state funeral when he died in 1992, five months before the court handed down it's historic decision.
